Happy Pastor Appreciation Month
Good day, everyone. As we enter October, we celebrate Pastor Appreciation Month, a time to recognize and honor the men who faithfully serve as shepherds of God’s flock. It is essential to understand the biblical basis for appreciating and supporting our pastors. Scripture encourages us to recognize the labor of those who lead and teach us in the Lord. In 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (KJV), we read,
“And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.”
This passage highlights the call for us to acknowledge the hard work of our pastors, to hold them in high regard, and to show love and appreciation for their dedication to the ministry.
The Example of Moses
When we think of a biblical example of a leader who served faithfully, Moses comes to mind. He was chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and guide them through the wilderness. His role as a shepherd was not easy. He faced constant challenges—grumbling, rebellion, and the heavy burden of interceding for the people. Yet, Moses remained faithful to God and to the people, continually leading, teaching, and praying for them.
In Exodus 17:11-12 (KJV), we see a beautiful picture of the support needed by a leader:
“And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.”
This passage illustrates the importance of supporting our pastors. Moses could not hold up his hands alone; he needed the help of Aaron and Hur. Similarly, our pastors bear heavy spiritual responsibilities, and they, too, need our support, encouragement, and prayers to carry out their God-given duties effectively.
Ways to Show Appreciation
- Pray for Your Pastor
Prayer is one of the most significant ways to support your pastor. Pray for strength, wisdom, and encouragement in the face of challenges. Your prayers are a spiritual lifting of their hands, just as Aaron and Hur did for Moses. - Encourage and Express Gratitude
A simple “thank you” can mean a lot. Write a note, send a message, or speak words of encouragement. Let your pastor know how their teaching or counsel has impacted your life. - Help with the Ministry Work
Offer to serve in the church in areas where help is needed. Your involvement not only lightens the load but also shows that you are standing alongside your pastor in the work of the ministry. - Give Thoughtful Gifts or Acts of Service
Small acts of kindness, like a meal, a gift card, or even offering to help with household chores, can be meaningful ways to express appreciation.
As we observe Pastor Appreciation Month, let us remember the example of Moses and the importance of supporting our spiritual leaders. When we uphold our pastors, we enable them to continue leading us faithfully in God’s work. Let us honor them, not just in October, but all year round, as they shepherd the flock and watch over our souls.
Hebrews 13:17 (KJV) reminds us:
“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.”
May we be a source of joy and encouragement for our pastors, lifting them up and appreciating the vital role they play in the Body of Christ.
